Buying Poker Chips: What should you look out for?

Poker chips come in all shapes, sizes and colours. What do you have to consider when buying poker chips? In this article we will explain to you what types of poker chips there are, for what purposes they are suitable, and what the advantages and disadvantages are. We will distinguish between the types of poker chips and the different purposes for which they are used.

What types of poker chips are there?

In general, we distinguish 3 different materials of poker chips. We're talking about ABS poker chips, clay poker chips, and ceramic poker chips. Within each category there are also differences in quality, but these differences are more focused on the casino branch than the consumer market.

The kind of poker chip you choose depends entirely on the purpose. Will you use them for a home poker night or will you be hosting tournaments? Are they tournament chips or cash game chips? Do you want to buy them standard, print them or maybe design them yourself?

ABS Poker chips / Poker chips for beginners

A bit more expensive than the plastic poker chips are the ABS Poker chips. ABS stands for Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene. The material has the following properties: solid, hard, long life, high melting temperature, easy to inject, electrically insulating, paintable and metalizing and a high resistance to chemicals.

The ABS poker chips are cheap and generally of a pretty good quality. The chips are weighted plastic poker chips. An ABS poker chip generally weighs 11.5 grams, this is due to a piece of metal on the inside.

ABS poker chips must be ordered in large quantities. In addition, there are actually only 2-color and 3-color variants on the market. These poker chips are also available in a poker set. In addition to poker chips, a poker set also contains poker cards and other small poker products.

Clay poker chips

The clay composite poker chips are the type of poker chips you often see in the casino. The chips are usually 13,5 grams heavy and have a professional appearance. Due to the heavier weight and material, the poker chips make a significantly different sound than lighter poker chips. You'll notice the difference considerably when you walk into a poker room where ABS poker chips are used, or where Clay poker chips are used. These also have a metal weight inside the chip to make sure they are of the correct weight. A big advantage of the weight is that you can easily make high stacks of poker chips and they are much less likely to fall over.

Ceramic poker chips

The ceramic poker chip is one of the most expensive poker chips on the market. These poker chips can be designed in full-color by you. Unlike the poker chips mentioned above, they are made entirely of ceramic. The ceramic poker chip is our favorite.

The ceramic poker chips are best suited to be ordered custom-made in small numbers.

Poker chips with value

When you go looking for poker chips you will see that there are many chips on the market without a value. These are the cheapest chips available, but we want to warn you. Using poker chips without a value is quite irritating. During a game of poker you have to remember which chip has which value. That's why it's better to buy poker chips with printed values.

Poker chips with euro value

Chips with a euro value imprint are very handy when you want to play a cash game. You can use the value on the chip as the value it actually represents. Sometimes you see poker chips with a dollar print. Of course you can also just use that value as the euro value.

Poker chips printing

Depending on the quality of poker chip you wish to purchase, you may choose different types of printing or sticking. You can even design the ceramic poker chips yourself, as they are produced in full colour.
